Review of The Heart's Charge by Karen Witemeyer

About the Book ~

For Years They've Been Nomads for Justice, but a Final Mission May Just Lead Their Hearts Home.

Members of the legendary Hanger's Horsemen, Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks arrive in Llano County, Texas, to deliver a steed, never expecting they'd help deliver a baby as well. Left with an infant to care for, they head to a nearby foundling home, where Mark encounters the woman he nearly married a decade ago.

After failing at love, Katherine Palmer has dedicated her life to caring for children, teaming up with Eliza Southerland to start Harmony House. Eliza understands the pain of not fitting society's mold, being illegitimate and of mixed ancestry. Yet those are the very attributes that lead her to minister to outcast children. The taciturn Jonah intrigues her by defying all her stereotypes of men, but there are secrets behind his eyes--ghosts from wars past and others still being waged.

When the Horsemen hear rumors of missing children, they stay to investigate, sticking close to Harmony House and its beautiful owners. As they work together to uncover the truth, love and danger grow hand in hand until a final sinister scheme threatens to destroy them all.

My Thoughts ~

If you're looking for a fast-paced, quick western with twice as much romance, then The Heart's Charge by Karen Witemeyer should be added to the wobbly TBR pile on your nightstand!

The Heart's Charge pulled me into its western world and gave me all the John Wayne vibes! I enjoyed how the story centered around the home for outcast children; it really tugged on my heartstrings! Additionally, Mark and Katherine get a second chance at love as sparks fly between Jonah and Eliza, so their romances were sweet and fun. While the villain didn't surprise me, I thought the author laid out those plot twists well. However, as much as I enjoyed Jonah and Mark's friendship and seeing their interactions while they wooed their respective ladies, their stories felt condensed within the single book. That said, I did enjoy the way their stories built upon each other.

The Heart's Charge is sprinkled with lots of spiritual truths as Jonah, Mark, Katherine, and Eliza healed from their respective wounds. However, the most striking and overarching message proved to be that you can't define a person by their worst mistake. The different ways the heroes and heroines grappled and surrendered to this truth painted a beautiful picture of the way God defines us -- covered in His love, grace, and mercy!

Three Stars ~  The Heart's Charge by Karen Witemeyer is a fun, romantic western! The Heart's Charge is the second book in the author's Hanger's Horsemen Series, but the story can be read without reading the previous book.

Review of The Kissing Tree Novella Collection

In this Texas-sized romance novella collection, courting couples, decades apart, leave a permanent mark of their love by carving their initials into the same oak's bark.

Regina Jennings - "Broken Limbs, Mended Hearts"

When her job is put on the line, can she trust the man who disrupted her life to help her fight for a brighter future?

Karen Witemeyer - "Inn for a Surprise"
Determined to keep love alive for others, Phoebe Woodward builds an inn that caters to couples. When her father sends a property manager to help make it a success, she finds her whimsical vision thwarted by his stodgy practicality. Finding the right blend of romance and reality is a challenge, and her spinster heart may be in for a surprise.

Amanda Dykes - "From Roots to Sky"
WWII airman Luke Hampstead found comfort in letters from the sister of a lost compatriot. When he visits Texas to thank her, he discovers her constructing a project with surprising ties to his letters . . . and that she herself is even more surprising. While a promising opportunity awaits him elsewhere, will what they've shared be enough to give their future flight?

Nicole Deese - "Heartwood"
Abby Brookshire's world is turned upside down when the historic tree she's strived to preserve as the head groundskeeper at the Kissing Tree Inn is put in danger of removal. My Thoughts ~

The Kissing Tree is everything I love in a novella collection! Each story is pure loveliness!

I adore when each novella continues to build on the previous stories in the collection! As we follow these four sweet stories, readers get to stay connected to the continuous generations of Oak Springs and the characters who are destined to capture many hearts! However, the detail that truly sets this novella collection apart is the Kissing Tree itself! From origin story to the bittersweet end, readers get to be part of the Kissing Tree's life in each of these beautifully crafted moments through the decades!

Regina Jennings - "Broken Limbs, Mended Hearts"

"Broken Limns, Mended Hearts" was a wonderful story to brand the romantic oak tree of Oak Springs as THE Kissing Tree! I also really enjoyed the way new technology with respect for the past was melded into the fabric of the couple's conflict!

Karen Witemeyer - "Inn for a Surprise"

"Inn for a Surprise" was so much fun! We join the story as the newly-built Kissing Tree Inn is being prepared for its first guests. I adored the witty banter between the couple and learning of the different couples who found their way to the Kissing Tree, thus inspiring the creation of the Kissing Tree Inn!

Amanda Dykes - "From Roots to Sky"

"From Roots to Sky" is tale with as much perseverance as there is romance! We rejoin Oak Springs and the Kissing Tree after hard financial times, war, and grief have reached their unapologetic hands into the community. I loved the way the community worked together and the poetic way the couple found both their roots and their wings in life!

Nicole Deese - "Heartwood"

"Heartwood" is the perfect balance of bittersweet, second chances, and new beginnings to close out this novella collection! The apt portrayal of how grief can affect even the sturdiest of relationships hit me in the feels! I adored the chemistry between the couple as they found their second chance at a new beginning! However, the beautiful message of how letting go -- symbolically and literally -- can never remove the legacy carved into our heartwood is what makes this conclusion so perfect!

Five Stars ~ The Kissing Tree is one of my favorite novella collections to date! Additionally, each of the authors has a plethora of novels in their respective backlists!

Review of At Love's Command by Karen Witemeyer

About the Book ~

He's fought through ruthless outlaws and injury. But with her, he's tempted to surrender.

Haunted by the horrors of war, ex-cavalry officer Matthew Hanger leads a band of mercenaries known as Hanger's Horsemen who have become legends in 1890s Texas. They defend the innocent and obtain justice for the oppressed. But when a rustler's bullet leaves one of them at death's door, they're the ones in need of saving.

Dr. Josephine Burkett is used to men taking one look at her skirts and discounting her medical skills. What she's not used to is having a man change his mind in a heartbeat and offer to assist her in surgery. Matthew's dedication to his friend during recovery earns Josephine's respect, and when her brother is abducted, he becomes her only hope for rescue.

When plans go awry and Josephine is caught in the crossfire, Matthew may have to sacrifice everything--even his team--to save her.

My Thoughts ~

If you're a fan of action-packed westerns, romance, and soul-stirring faith, then pick up a copy of At Love's Command by Karen Witemeyer! From setting, pace, and character development, the author certainly delivered a commanding story that readers will love!

My favorite aspect of At Love's Command was definitely the characters! I really loved each of the men in Hanger's Horsemen! I loved their sense of loyalty, chivalry, and duty. Their brotherly bond brought a huge smile to my heart. While I adored Matthew Hanger -- leader of Hanger's Horsemen -- I'm really hoping for a story from each of the Horsemen's perspectives.

The book blurb wasn't kidding when it said Matthew Hanger was haunted by the horrors of war! From the heartbreaking start at the Wounded Knee Massacre to his devastating childhood, the death and devastation Matthew witnessed twisted my gut. However, the author did a superb job at not dwelling on graphic atrocities, instead using these to shape Matthew and his vow to remain unattached. Enter Josephine, the kind of strong heroine who makes me grin! With her "ten-dollar words," her spunky bucking of convention, and her steadfast faith as she forged her way in a profession largely dominated by men in that era, how could I not love her?

In the midst of a plethora of life-and-death situations raging around them, Josephine and Matthew's faith journeys were -- blessedly! -- gentler. The way their individual relationships with God were strengthened was like a gentle rain on a sun-scorched desert. From the way Josephine had to relinquish her control of painful, scary situations to the beautiful way the author used God's divine provision to help free Matthew from the fear of losing those he loved, readers will be convicted by the grace and love of God.

Four Stars ~ At Love's Command by Karen Witemeyer is an action-packed western filled with romance and faith! At Love's Command is the first book in the author's new Hanger's Horsemen Series, and I am eager to see what's next for Hanger's Horsemen!
