Review of The Metropolitan Affair by Jocelyn Green

About the Book ~

For years her explorer father promised Dr. Lauren Westlake she'd accompany him on one of his Egyptian expeditions. But as the empty promises mounted, Lauren determined to earn her own way. Now the assistant curator of Egyptology for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lauren receives two unexpected invitations.

The first is her repentant father's offer to finally bring her to Egypt as his colleague on a new expedition. The second is a chance to enter the world of New York's wealthiest patrons who have been victims of art fraud.

With Egyptomania sweeping the city after the discovery of King Tut's tomb, Detective Joe Caravello is on the hunt for a notorious forger preying on the open wallets of New York's high society. Dr. Westlake is just the expert he needs to help him track the criminal. Together they search for the truth, and the closer Lauren and Joe get to discovering the forger's identity, the more entangled they become in a web of deception and crime.

My Thoughts ~

The Metropolitan Affair by Jocelyn Green is the cat's pajamas and other fun slang from the Roaring Twenties!

The Roaring Twenties is the cream in my coffee, so The Metropolitan Affair caught my attention right away! I enjoyed how the author portrayed some of the glitz and glam of the era through different avenues such as Lauren's work though the museum, while also showing the seedy underbelly via Joe's work as a detective. I also loved how the author addressed some of the sexism and misogyny against women in the workplace. I thoroughly enjoyed learning different facets of Egyptian culture in a historical setting -- so fun!

The spiritual journey in The Metropolitan Affair made me cry! Though Joe had some profound moments of choosing to trust, Lauren's spiritual journey took center stage! Lauren's abusive father horrifically colored her view of her worth and God. However, it was the way the author showed the complete, sacrificial love of God wholly though Lauren's mother that undid me. I loved how the author depicted this profound truth that is often missing from the broader conversation.

Four Stars ~ The Metropolitan Affair by Jocelyn Green is the bee's knees! The Metropolitan Affair is the first book in the author's new series, On Central Park. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
